New Delhi, Sunday 24, January 2010: Grape juice has similar effect on heart as red wine. Grape juice has the same protective effect against heart disease as red wine, said         Dr. K K Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India and E medinews.

Dr. Aggarwal said that according to a study done by the researchers at the University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg published in the journal Cardiovascular Research has shown that red wine and certain types of grape juice have high levels of polyphenols, which block the production of a protein linked to cardiovascular disease.

Polyphenols in grape juice activate endothelial cells to produce nitric oxide, which helps to protect against cardiovascular disease and to maintain healthy blood vessels and blood pressure.

Folic acid may improve thinking skills. Folic acid dietary supplements significantly improve thinking skills that tend to decline with normal aging. By law, flour in the United States is fortified with folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects in newborns. In India, Government is coming out with a pilot project where fortified flour will be given to the people in the quota ration.
Copious alcohol use shortens life span by about 12 years.

Alcohol and hepatitis C infection do not go together. If you are hepatitis C positive it is better to avoid alcohol altogether. A study has shown that heavy alcohol use increases mortality with hepatitis C virus (HCV). In the study female hepatitis C patients who were not heavy drinkers died at an average age of 61 years, while those who drank died at 49 years.
